== Epidemiology == Research on the epidemiology of vocal fold nodules in children has suggested that nodules are more common in boys (2:1), in particular boys who are active and scream more frequently.<ref name=pmid2199731/><ref>{{cite book |first1=Rex J. |last1=Prater |first2=Roger W. |last2=Swift |title=Manual of Voice Therapy |publisher=Pro-Ed |location=Austin |year=1984 |isbn=978-0-89079-279-7 }}{{page needed|date=November 2016}}</ref> However, in adulthood, women are more likely to have nodules, and are especially likely if they have an outgoing personality or sing frequently.<ref name=pmid19342952/> The exact prevalence of vocal fold nodules is not known, but it has been reported that 23.4% of children who attended an [[Otorhinolaryngology|ENT]] clinic for voice [[Dysphonia|hoarseness]], 6% of phoniatric clinic attendees, and 43% of teachers with [[dysphonia]] had nodules.<ref name="Verdolini et al 2014 Vocal Fold Nodules"/>
