It was originally built for a proposed railway line that would connect [[Surabaya Gubeng railway station|Gubeng]] and [[Surabaya Pasar Turi railway station|Pasar Turi station]] on an elevated line. Due to [[Great Depression|economic crisis in the 1930s]], which was followed by the [[Second World War]], and lastly the [[Indonesian National Revolution]], the project was never completed; the bridge stood as testimony of the forgotten project.
