Two almost equivalent pairs of oxidation states, arbitrarily chosen, are obtained for these atoms. * when an electronegative [[p-block]] atom forms solely homonuclear bonds, the number of which differs from the number of two-electron bonds suggested by [[Octet rule|rules]].
