At most universities and colleges in the United States, ''matriculation'' refers to mere enrollment or registration as a student at a university or college by a student intending to earn a degree, an event which involves no special ceremony.

Some colleges that have a formal matriculation ceremony and name it as such, while others call this enrollment ceremony for new students a "[[convocation]]". At some institutions, these ceremonies are relatively new. Many medical schools highlight matriculation with a [[white coat ceremony]]. This is a relatively recent phenomenon, originating at [[University of Chicago]]'s [[Pritzker School of Medicine]] in 1989.
