===Improving metallurgy and design===
[[John Deere (inventor)|John Deere]], an [[Illinois]] blacksmith, noted that ploughing many sticky, non-sandy soils might benefit from modifications in the design of the mould board and the metals used. A polished needle would enter leather and fabric with greater ease and a polished pitchfork also require less effort.
