Heading into the 1990 NHL entry draft, [[Mike Ricci (ice hockey)|Mike Ricci]] had spent the entire 1989–90 season ranked as the top prospect by the [[NHL Central Scouting Bureau]].<ref name="zurkowski">{{cite news|last=Zurkowski|first=Herb|title=Titans leading 3-0 have Tigres by tail|work=[[The Gazette (Montreal)|The Gazette]]|date=1990-04-27|page=D5}}</ref> Before the release of the final rankings of North American skaters and goaltenders, it was speculated [[Owen Nolan]], [[Keith Primeau]] and [[Petr Nedvěd|Petr Nedved]] would surpass Ricci; however, when the final rankings were released, Ricci remained as the top prospect.<ref name="zurkowski"/><ref name="CentralScouting">{{cite news|title=Cream of the crop|publisher=The Gazette|date=1990-04-28|page=C1}}</ref> [[Jaromír Jágr|Jaromir Jagr]] was also considered to be one of the top prospects, but Central Scouting did not rank European players.<ref>{{cite news|title=NHL DRAFT; Fab Five make this dream year|work=[[Ottawa Citizen]]|date=1990-06-15|page=F1}}</ref> Petr Nedved was an exception to that, as he played in North America after he defected his native Czechoslovakia.
