==Phylogeny==
The genus ''Alligator'' belongs to the [[subfamily (biology)|subfamily]] [[Alligatorinae]], which is the [[sister taxon]] to [[Caimaninae]] (the [[caimans]]). Together, these two subfamilies form the [[family (biology)|family]] [[Alligatoridae]].
