==Geography== Colfax is located in southeastern Washington and the nearest cities are Spokane, Pullman, Moscow, and Lewiston/Clarkston. The area is geologically interesting, lying in the midst of the fertile Palouse country in the middle of the Columbia River Plateau, with the Rocky Mountains to the east, the Channeled Scablands to the west, and the Snake River to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.79 sqmi, all of it land. The Palouse River, confined for flood control to a concrete bed that reduces it to an eighteen-inch-wide stream during the dry season, runs through the middle of town, parallel to Main Street. Colfax has a four-season continental climate (Köppen Dsb), with hot, dry summers, cold winters, and a rainy season that generally runs from autumn til spring. The annual rainfall averages less than 20 in a year. This climate, together with the deep, rich Palouse topsoil, makes for near-ideal wheat growing conditions. {{Weather box |single line= yes |collapsed = yes |location= Colfax, Washington (1971–2000) |Jan record high F = 63 |Feb record high F = 67 |Mar record high F = 78 |Apr record high F = 93 |May record high F = 98 |Jun record high F = 106<!-- The temperature was observed on June 30, 2021, but was not archived (the station no longer archives temperatures). --> |Jul record high F = 110 |Aug record high F = 108 |Sep record high F = 103 |Oct record high F = 95 |Nov record high F = 75 |Dec record high F = 65 |year record high F= |Jan high F= 37.4 |Feb high F= 43.5 |Mar high F= 51.2 |Apr high F= 58.9 |May high F= 66.8 |Jun high F= 73.9 |Jul high F= 82.7 |Aug high F= 83.3 |Sep high F= 74.6 |Oct high F= 62.0 |Nov high F= 45.6 |Dec high F= 37.6 |Jan mean F= 30.9 |Feb mean F= 35.3 |Mar mean F= 41.0 |Apr mean F= 47.3 |May mean F= 54.1 |Jun mean F= 60.5 |Jul mean F= 66.6 |Aug mean F= 66.4 |Sep mean F= 58.2 |Oct mean F= 47.7 |Nov mean F= 37.8 |Dec mean F= 31.3 |Jan low F= 24.3 |Feb low F= 27.0 |Mar low F= 30.8 |Apr low F= 35.7 |May low F= 41.3 |Jun low F= 47.0 |Jul low F= 50.4 |Aug low F= 49.4 |Sep low F= 41.7 |Oct low F= 33.3 |Nov low F= 29.9 |Dec low F= 24.9 |Jan record low F = -32 |Feb record low F = -23 |Mar record low F = -5 |Apr record low F = 10 |May record low F = 16 |Jun record low F = 23 |Jul record low F = 24 |Aug record low F = 24 |Sep record low F = 19 |Oct record low F = -1 |Nov record low F = -11 |Dec record low F = -33 |year record low F= |Jan precipitation inch= 2.33 |Feb precipitation inch= 1.94 |Mar precipitation inch= 2.02 |Apr precipitation inch= 1.73 |May precipitation inch= 1.80 |Jun precipitation inch= 1.37 |Jul precipitation inch= 0.72 |Aug precipitation inch= 0.72 |Sep precipitation inch= 0.73 |Oct precipitation inch= 1.20 |Nov precipitation inch= 2.55 |Dec precipitation inch= 2.93 |source 1= NOAA (normals, 1971–2000) |date=April 2011}}
