== Definition == Flight levels<ref>{{cite book |url=https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/media/pcg_basic_chgs%201_2_9-13-18.pdf |title=Aeronautical Information Manual |author=Federal Aviation Administration |author-link=Federal Aviation Administration |chapter=Pilot/Controller Glossary |page=PCG Fβ3 |date= 29 March 2018 |access-date=1 March 2019}}</ref> are described by a number, which is the nominal altitude, or [[pressure altitude]], in hundreds of feet, and a multiple of 500 ft. Therefore, a pressure altitude of {{cvt|32000|ft}} is referred to as "flight level 320". In metre altitudes the format is Flight Level xx000 metres. Flight levels are usually designated in writing as ''FLxxx'', where ''xxx'' is a two- or three-digit number indicating the pressure altitude in units of {{convert|100|ft|m}}. In radio communications, FL290 would be stated as "flight level two nine(r) zero".
