The earliest fossil flyingfish are known from the [[Ypresian|Early Eocene]] of [[Monte Bolca]], Italy. They include the genus ''[[Rhamphexocoetus]]'' <small>Bannikov ''et al''., 1985</small>, which appears to be [[Transitional fossil|transitional]] between [[Halfbeak|halfbeaks]] and flyingfishes.
