According to Christian ideas, "foolishness" included consistent rejection of worldly cares and [[Imitation of Christ|imitating Christ]], who endured mockery and humiliation from the crowd. The spiritual meaning of "foolishness" from the [[Early Christianity|early ages of Christianity]] was closely related to that of rejection of common social rules of hypocrisy, brutality and quest for power and gains.<ref name="jclc"/>

===Paul the Apostle===
Part of the [[Bible|Biblical]] basis for it can be seen in the words of the [[Apostle Paul]] in {{bibleverse|1|Corinthians|4:10|KJV}}, which famously says:

:"We are ''fools for Christ's sake'', but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised." ([[KJV]]).

And also:

:"For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: 'He catches the wise in their craftiness.'" ({{bibleverse|1|Corinthians|3:19}})

:"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." ({{bibleverse|1|Corinthians|1:18}})

:"For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe." ({{bibleverse|1|Corinthians|1:21}})
