Hydrocarbons may form charged structures: positively charged [[carbocation]]s or negative [[carbanion]]s. Carbocations are often named ''-um''. Examples are [[tropylium]] and [[triphenylmethyl]] cations and the [[cyclopentadienyl]] anion.
