Glanders is caused by infection with the ''Burkholderia mallei'' [[bacteria|bacterium]], usually by way of the ingestion of [[contamination|contaminated]] animal feed and drinking water; because glanders is infectious to human beings, the ''B. mallei'' bacterium is classed as a [[zoonosis|zoonotic]] agent.
