It was redesignated as the Governor General's Foot Guards on 16 September 1887; as The Governor General's Foot Guards on 1 April 1896; as the 2nd (Reserve) Battalion, The Governor General's Foot Guards on 7 November 1941; as The Governor General's Foot Guards on 31 January 1946; as The Governor General's Foot Guards (5th Battalion, [[The Canadian Guards]]) on 1 September 1954; as the Governor General's Foot Guards (5th Battalion, The Canadian Guards) on 25 April 1958; and finally returned to the name ''Governor General's Foot Guards'' on 1 September 1976.<ref name=DND/> In the Canadian Forces, units may make formal, official links between each other called ''affiliations''. These affiliations are "to foster continuous fraternal connections between military organizations beyond the close, professional relationships which are always encouraged."<ref name="HeritageStructure8-1">{{cite book|title=The Heritage Structure of the Canadian Forces|date=4 January 1999|publisher=Directorate of History and Heritage|pages=8β1}}</ref> The GGFG were affiliated with the Canadian Guards, and from 1954 to 1976 they used a Canadian Guards battalion number in token of the affiliation. Despite the battalion number, the GGFG were considered a separate regiment from the Canadian Guards. The affiliation automatically ceased when the Canadian Guards were put on the [[Supplementary Order of Battle]] in 1970.<ref name="HeritageStructure8-4">{{cite book|title=The Heritage Structure of the Canadian Forces|date=4 January 1999|publisher=Directorate of History and Heritage|pages=8β4}}</ref> {{chart top|Lineage chart<ref name=lineage/>}} {{chart/start}} {{chart|aa869| | | | | |Idpdf| | | | |aa869=1869|border_aa869=0|Idpdf=Independent rifle {{abbr|coys|companies}}}} {{chart|aa872| | | | | |1GGFG| | | | |1GGFG=1st {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}} Governor General's Foot Guards|aa872=1872|border_aa872=0}} {{chart|aa877| | | | | | GGFG| | | | |aa877=1877|border_aa877=0|GGFG=Governor General's Foot Guards}} {{chart|aa896| | | | | | GGFG| | | | |GGFG=The Governor General's Foot Guards|aa896=1896|border_aa896=0}} {{chart|aa914| | a2B | | |!| | | | | |a2B=2nd {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, {{abbr|CEF|Canadian Expeditionary Force}}|aa914=1914|border_aa914=0}} {{chart|aa915| | |!| | | |!| | | 77OB|77OB=77th "Overseas" {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}', {{abbr|CEF|Canadian Expeditionary Force}}|aa915=1915|border_aa915=0}} {{chart|aa916| | |!| | | |!| | |Aa773|Aa773=''Absorbed by 47th and 73rd "Overseas" {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, {{abbr|CEF|Canadian Expeditionary Force}}''|aa916=1916|border_aa916=0}} {{chart| | | | | |!| | | |!| | | |:| |}} {{chart|aa920| |Dbndd| |1GGFG| |2GGFG|2GGFG=2nd {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}} (77th {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, {{abbr|CEF|Canadian Expeditionary Force}}),{{efn|Reserve order of battle}} The Governor General's Foot Guards|1GGFG=1st {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, The Governor General's Foot Guards|Dbndd=''Disbanded''|aa920=1920|border_aa920=0}} {{chart|aa931| | |L|~|~|1GGFG| | |!| |1GGFG=1st {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}} (2nd {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, {{abbr|CEF|Canadian Expeditionary Force}}), The Governor General's Foot Guards|aa931=1931|border_aa931=0}} {{chart|aa936| | | | | | GGFG| |Dbndd|GGFG=The Governor General's Foot Guards|Dbndd=''Disbanded''|aa936=1936|border_aa936=0}} {{chart|aa940| | GGFG| | |!| | | | | |GGFG=The Governor General's Foot Guards, {{abbr|CASF|Canadian Active Service Force}}|aa940=1940|border_aa940=0}} {{chart|aa940| |1GGFG| | |!| | | | | |1GGFG=1st {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, The Governor General's Foot Guards, {{abbr|CASF|Canadian Active Service Force}}|aa940=1940|border_aa940=0}} {{chart|aa941| | |!| | |2GGFG| | | | |aa941=1941|border_aa941=0|2GGFG=2nd (Reserve) {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, The Governor General's Foot Guards}} {{chart|aa942| | 21AR| | |!| | | | | |21AR=21st {{abbr|Armd|Armoured}} {{abbr|Regt|Regiment}} (The Governor General's Foot Guards), {{abbr|CAC|Canadian Armoured Corps}}, {{abbr|CASF|Canadian Active Service Force}}|aa942=1942|border_aa942=0}} {{chart|aa945| | 21AR| | |!| | | | | |aa945=1945|border_aa945=0|21AR=21st {{abbr|Armd|Armoured}} {{abbr|Regt|Regiment}} (The Governor General's Foot Guards), {{abbr|RCAC|Royal Canadian Armoured Corps}}, {{abbr|CASF|Canadian Active Service Force}}}} {{chart|aa946| |Dbndd| | GGFG| | | | |GGFG=The Governor General's Foot Guards|aa946=1946|border_aa946=0|Dbndd=''Disbanded''}} {{chart|aa954| | | | | | GGFG| | | | |GGFG=The Governor General's Foot Guards (5th {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, The Canadian Guards)|aa954=1954|border_aa954=0}} {{chart|aa958| | | | | | GGFG| | | | |aa958=1958|border_aa958=0|GGFG=Governor General's Foot Guards (5th {{abbr|Bn|Battalion}}, The Canadian Guards)}} {{chart|aa976| | | | | | GGFG| | | | |aa976=1976|border_aa976=0|GGFG=Governor General's Foot Guards}} {{chart| | | | | | | | | |!| | | | | |}} {{chart/end}} {{chart bottom}}
