Scholars of a century ago speculated that Judæo-Aramaic was the vernacular language of Israel at the time of [[Jesus]]. Archaeology is calling that into question.{{citation needed|date=June 2021}} Aramaic does survive on a minority of first-century funeral inscriptions,{{citation needed|date=June 2021}} and it was also the language used to write parts of the [[Book of Daniel]], the [[Book of Ezra]], and the entire Jewish Babylonian [[Talmud]]. Aramaic remained the [[lingua franca]] of the Middle East until the time of Islam.

Judæo-Aramaic names include {{lang|he|rtl=yes|עבד־נגו}} ''[[Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego|ʻĂḇēḏ-nəḡô]]'', {{lang|he|rtl=yes|בר־תלמי}} ''[[Bartholomew|Bar-Talmay]]'' and {{lang|he|rtl=yes|תום}} ''[[Thomas (name)|Tôm]]'', as well as [[Bar Kochba]].
