===Name===
The municipality (originally the [[prestegjeld|parish]]) is named after the old ''[[Kleppe|Klepp]]'' farm ({{langx|non|Kleppi}}) since the first [[Klepp Church]] was built there. The name is the [[dative case]] of the word {{lang|non|kleppr}} which means "rocky hill". The inscription on the [[Klepp I Runestone]] indicates that the name has been in use since the late 10th or early 11th century.
