It seems that it was the symbol of the [[arche]] of the creation (Mater-arche).<ref name=Schachermeyr-1964/>{{rp|style=ama|p= 161}} Small versions were used as [[votive offering]]s and have been found in considerable numbers; the [[Arkalochori Axe]] is a famous and rather larger example.
