==Military service== During the [[World War II|Second World War]], Gilbert served with the [[British Army]] in [[North African campaign|North Africa]] and [[Italian campaign (World War II)|Italy]] with the [[Honourable Artillery Company]]. In 1943, he was captured and taken as a [[prisoner of war]] in northern Italy near [[Parma]]. Along with [[Eric Newby]] and Tony Davies, Capt.
