Each subunit is individually rainbow colored.]] Functional NMDA receptors are heterotetramers comprising different combinations of the GluN1, GluN2 (A-D), and GluN3 (A-B) subunits derived from distinct gene families (''Grin1''-''Grin3''). All NMDARs contain two of the obligatory GluN1 subunits, which when assembled with GluN2 subunits of the same type, give rise to canonical diheteromeric (''d''-) NMDARs (e.g., GluN1-2A-1-2A).
