==Papacy== Boniface was later [[Papal selection before 1059|elected]], largely due to the influence of [[Athalaric|Athalaric, King of Ostrogoths]].<ref name=":0">{{DBI|author= Paolo Bertolini |title=Bonifacio II, papa |url=https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/papa-bonifacio-ii_%28Dizionario-Biografico%29/ |volume=12}}</ref> For a time, he served as pope in competition with [[Antipope Dioscorus|Dioscorus]], who had been elected by most of the priests of [[Rome]]. Boniface and Dioscorus were both [[consecrated]] in Rome on 22 September 530, but Dioscurus died only twenty-two days later.<ref name="ce-boniface" /> Boniface II's most notable act was confirming the decisions of the [[Council of Orange (529)|Council of Orange]], teaching that [[Divine grace|grace]] is always necessary to obtain salvation.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02660a.htm|title=Pope Boniface II|website=Catholic Encyclopedia|language=en-gb|access-date=17 March 2017}}</ref>
