Evidence of ancient settlement in the area includes a number of [[ringfort]], [[castle]] and [[bawn]] sites in the [[townland]]s of Ballygown South, Gortshaneroe and Cloonanagh.<ref>{{cite book | title = The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary.
