== Legacy == Kavad's reign is considered a turning point in Sasanian history.{{sfn|Schindel|2013a|pp=136β141}} Since he successfully handled many challenges and issues, he is considered one of the most effective and successful kings to rule the Sasanian Empire.{{sfn|Schindel|2013a|pp=136β141}} In the words of Iranologist Nikolaus Schindel he was "a genius in his own right, even if of a somewhat [[NiccolΓ² Machiavelli|Machiavellian]] type."{{sfn|Schindel|2013a|pp=136β141}} He was successful in his efforts to reinvigorate his declining empire, paving the way for a smooth transition to his son Khosrow I, who inherited a powerful empire. Khosrow improved it further during his reign, becoming one of the most popular shahs of Iran and earning the epithet Anushirvan ("the immortal soul").<ref>{{harvnb|Kia|2016|pp=256β257, 261}}; {{harvnb|Schindel|2013a|pp=136β141}}; {{harvnb|Daryaee|2014|pp=28β30}}</ref> The [[Ziyarid dynasty]], which mainly ruled over Tabaristan and Gorgan between 931 and 1090, claimed that the founder of the dynasty, [[Mardavij]] ({{reign|930|935}}), was descended from Kavad.{{sfn|Curtis|Stewart|2009|p=38}}{{sfn|Spuler|2014|pp=344β345}}
