==Intrawar deterrence== Intrawar deterrence is deterrence within a war context. It means that war has broken out but actors still seek to deter certain forms of behavior. In the words of Caitlin Talmadge, "intra-war deterrence failures... can be thought of as causing wars to get worse in some way."<ref>{{Cite journal|last=Talmadge|first=Caitlin|date=2019|title=Emerging technology and intra-war escalation risks: Evidence from the Cold War, implications for today|url=https://doi.org/10.1080/01402390.2019.1631811|journal=Journal of Strategic Studies|volume=42|issue=6|pages=864β887|doi=10.1080/01402390.2019.1631811|s2cid=202312573|issn=0140-2390|url-access=subscription}}</ref> Examples of intrawar deterrence include deterring adversaries from resorting to nuclear, chemical and biological weapons attacks or attacking civilian populations indiscriminately.<ref>{{Cite book|last=Legro|first=Jeffrey|author-link=Jeffrey W.
