In a study of physicians who reported having made a mistake, it was offered that disclosing to non-physician sources of support may reduce stress more than disclosing to physician colleagues.<ref name="pmid8601210">{{cite journal |author=Newman MC |title=The emotional impact of mistakes on family physicians |journal=Archives of Family Medicine |volume=5 |issue=2 |pages=71–5 |year=1996 |pmid=8601210 |doi=10.1001/archfami.5.2.71}}</ref> This may be due to the finding that of the physicians in the same study, when presented with a hypothetical scenario of a mistake made by another colleague, only 32% of them would have unconditionally offered support.
