In [[Israel]], early elections to the [[Knesset]] can be called before the scheduled date of the third Tuesday in the Jewish month of [[Cheshvan]] (late September through early November) four years after the previous elections if the [[Prime Minister of Israel|prime minister]] calls early elections with Presidential approval due to gridlock, if no government is formed after 42 days of consultation with parties' floor leaders in the Knesset, if the budget is not approved by the Knesset by 31 March (3 months after the start of the fiscal year), or if half of the Knesset members vote in favor of early elections. This call for early elections is legally called the "Dissolution of the Knesset".

However, strictly speaking, the Knesset is only truly dissolved {{spaced ndash}}in the sense of being unconstituted and all MKs losing their seats{{spaced ndash}} automatically 14 days after elections, simultaneously with the start of the newly elected Knesset's term.
