=== Climatology === [[File:Greenhouse-effect-t2.svg|thumb|right|upright=1.55|The [[greenhouse effect]] with molecules of methane, water, and carbon dioxide re-radiating solar heat]] In the field of climatology, atmospheric infrared radiation is monitored to detect trends in the energy exchange between the Earth and the atmosphere. These trends provide information on long-term changes in Earth's climate. It is one of the primary parameters studied in research into [[global warming]], together with [[solar radiation]]. A [[pyrgeometer]] is utilized in this field of research to perform continuous outdoor measurements. This is a broadband infrared radiometer with sensitivity for infrared radiation between approximately 4.5 μm and 50 μm.
