W. Mayo worked with nuns from the [[Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, Minnesota|Sisters of St. Francis]] to treat the survivors.<ref name=Mayo/> After the disaster, Mother [[Alfred Moes]] and Mayo recognized the need for a hospital and joined to build [[Saint Marys Hospital (Rochester)|Saint Marys Hospital]] which opened in 1889.{{sfn|Risjord|2005|p=235}} The hospital, with over 1,100 beds, is now part of the Mayo Clinic, which grew out of the practice of William Worrall Mayo and his sons, [[William James Mayo]] (1861β1939) and [[Charles Horace Mayo]].<ref name=Mayo>{{cite web|url=http://www.mayoclinic.org/tradition-heritage/tornado-saint-marys.html|title=Tornado strikes Rochester β Saint Marys Hospital opens|publisher=[[Mayo Clinic]]|access-date=December 3, 2012|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120619072004/http://www.mayoclinic.org/tradition-heritage/tornado-saint-marys.html|archive-date=June 19, 2012}}</ref> Norman Risjord writes in ''A Popular History of Minnesota'' that Mayo was a "pioneer in the concept of integrated group practice of medicine" and is "one of the premier medical facilities in the world", with more than 40,000 employees including 2,000 physicians, by the beginning of the 21st century.{{sfn|Risjord|2005|p=237}} ''U.S. News & World Report''{{'s}} 2021 survey placed the Mayo Clinic first on the best hospitals honor roll and in the top four in most fields.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings|work=U.S. News & World Report|date=2021|title=Best hospitals by specialty |access-date= March 6, 2022 }}</ref> Apart from Mayo, Minnesota was an average northern state in developing public health programs after 1872, when the state board of medicine was established and public health programs began to operate.<ref>Philip D.
