* Without pawns, the queen normally wins but it can be difficult and there are some drawn positions (see {{seclink|Philidor position|Queen versus rook}}).
* If the rook has one pawn drawing positions are possible, depending on the pawn and the proximity of the rook and king. See {{seclink|Fortress (chess)|Rook and pawn versus queen}}. Otherwise the queen wins.
* If the rook has two [[connected pawns]] the position is usually a draw. For any other two pawns, the queen wins except in the positions where a fortress with one pawn can be reached.
* If the rook has three or more pawns the position is usually a draw but there are cases in which the queen wins and some in which the rook wins.
