Every citizen of Iran has an identification document called [[Shenasnameh]] ([[Iranian identity booklet]]) in [[Persian language|Persian]] (شناسنامه). This is a booklet based on the citizen's birth certificate which features their Shenasnameh National ID number, [[given name]], [[surname]], their birth date, their birthplace, and the names, birth dates and National ID numbers of their legal ascendants. Every Iranian permanent resident above the age of 15 must hold a valid [[Iranian National Identity Card|National Identity Card]] ([[Persian language|Persian]]:کارت ملی) or at least obtain their unique National Number from any of the local Vital Records branches of the Iranian [[Ministry of Interior]].<ref>[http://www.sabteahval.ir/Default.aspx?tabid=178 Obligation of National ID number for Iranian citizens] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200603151922/https://www.sabteahval.ir/Default.aspx?tabid=178 |date=2020-06-03  }} {{in lang|fa}}</ref>

In order to apply for an NID card, the applicant must be at least 15 years old and have a photograph attached to their [[Birth Certificate]], which is undertaken by the Vital Records branch.
