The MTA started allowing front side advertising in 2012.<ref name=":5"/> One of the earlier front side designs was an [[I Love New York]] card first sold in October 2013. Starting in December 2018, the MTA started issuing 250,000 ''[[Game of Thrones]]''-themed MetroCards at [[Grand Central–42nd Street (New York City Subway)|Grand Central–42nd Street]], in honor of the show's [[Game of Thrones (season 8)|final season]]. In November 2020, the MTA celebrated [[Veterans Day]] with Veterans Day themed MetroCards.
