===Regional dialects===
The language has quite a few regional variations. Banikanta Kakati identified two broad [[dialect]]s which he named (1) Eastern and (2) Western dialects,<ref name="Kakati 1941 16">"Assamese may be divided dialectically into Eastern and Western Assamese" {{harv|Kakati|1941|p=16}}</ref> of which the eastern dialect is homogeneous, and prevalent to the east of Guwahati, and the western dialect is heterogeneous.
