==Phonology== Welsh phonology The phonology of Welsh includes a number of sounds that do not occur in English and are typologically rare in European languages. The voiceless alveolar lateral fricative [ɬ], the voiceless nasals [m̥], [n̥] and [ŋ̊], and the voiceless alveolar trill [r̥] are distinctive features of the Welsh language. Stress usually falls on the penultimate syllable in polysyllabic words, and the word-final unstressed syllable receives a higher pitch than the stressed syllable. {| class="wikitable" style="text-align: center" |+Consonant phonemes ! ! colspan="2" |Labial ! colspan="2" |Dental ! colspan="2" |Alveolar ! colspan="2" |Lateral ! colspan="2" |[[Postalveolar consonant|Post-
alveolar]] ! colspan="2" |Palatal ! colspan="2" |Velar ! colspan="2" |Uvular ! colspan="2" |Glottal |- !Nasal | style="border-right: 0;" |m̥ | style="border-left: 0;" |m | colspan="2" | | style="border-right: 0;" |n̥ | style="border-left: 0;" |n | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | style="border-right: 0;" |ŋ̊ | style="border-left: 0;" |ŋ | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | |- !Stop | style="border-right: 0;" |p | style="border-left: 0;" |b | colspan="2" | | style="border-right: 0;" |t | style="border-left: 0;" |d | colspan="2" | | style="border-right: 0;" |(tʃ) | style="border-left: 0;" |(dʒ) | colspan="2" | | style="border-right: 0;" |k | style="border-left: 0;" |ɡ | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | |- !Fricative | style="border-right: 0;" |f | style="border-left: 0;" |v | style="border-right: 0;" |θ | style="border-left: 0;" |ð | style="border-right: 0;" |s | style="border-left: 0;" |(z) | style="border-right: 0;" | ɬ | style="border-left: 0;" | | style="border-right: 0;" |ʃ | style="border-left: 0;" | | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | style="border-right: 0;" | χ | style="border-left: 0;" | | style="border-right: 0;" |h | style="border-left: 0;" | |- !Trill | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | style="border-right: 0;" | r̥ | style="border-left: 0;" |r | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | |- !Approximant | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | | style="border-right: 0;" | | style="border-left: 0;" |l | style="border-right: 0;" | | style="border-left: 0;" | | style="border-right: 0;" | | style="border-left: 0;" |j | style="border-right: 0;" |(ʍ) | style="border-left: 0;" |w | colspan="2" | | colspan="2" | |} Symbols in parentheses are either allophones, or found only in loanwords. {| class="wikitable" style="text-align: center;" |+Vowel phonemes ! rowspan="2" | ! colspan="2" |Front ! colspan="2" |Central ! colspan="2" |Back |- !short !long !short !long !short !long |- !Close |ɪ |iː |ɨ̞ |ɨː |ʊ |uː |- !Mid |ɛ |eː |ə | |ɔ |oː |- !Open | | |a |aː | | |} The vowels /ɨ̞/ and /ɨ/ are only found in Northern varieties of Welsh.
