Its latitudinal range extends from [[59th parallel north|59°N]] to [[46th parallel south|46°S]]. Its temperature range is {{convert|10|-|25|C|F}}.<ref name=fishbase/> Its depth range is {{convert|0|-|600|m|ft fathom|abbr=on}} in the epipelagic and mesopelagic zones. It is most often found in surface waters {{convert|15.6|-|19.4|C|F}} in temperature, though larger individuals can be found in deeper waters {{convert|13.5|-|25.2|C|F}}. It can survive at temperatures as low as {{convert|9.5|C|F}} for short periods of time. It favors areas where warm and cool water mix.<ref name=fishbase/>
