==Etymology== The name "betatron" (a reference to the [[beta particle]], a fast electron) was chosen during a departmental contest. Other proposals were "rheotron", "induction accelerator", "induction electron accelerator",<ref>{{cite journal | journal = The Chemistry Leaflet | title = Shall New Machine Be Named Betatron or Rheotron | author = Science Service | volume = 15 | issue = 7–12 | year = 1942 | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=MHVPAAAAMAAJ&q=rheotron+betatron }}</ref> and even "''Außerordentlichehochgeschwindigkeitselektronenentwickelndesschwerarbeitsbeigollitron''", a suggestion by a German associate, for "Hard working by golly machine for generating extraordinarily high velocity electrons"<ref>{{cite web |author = Celia Elliot |title = Physics in the 1940s: The Betatron |work = Physics Illinois: Time Capsules |publisher = [[University of Illinois]] |location = Urbana-Champaign, IL |url = http://physics.illinois.edu/history/Betatron.asp |access-date = 13 April 2012 |archive-date = 15 April 2012 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20120415101011/http://physics.illinois.edu/history/Betatron.asp |url-status = dead }}</ref><ref>{{cite book | author1 = R.A.
