Sandler also lobbied for [[Bob Odenkirk]], a former ''[[Saturday Night Live]]'' colleague, to play the antagonist Eric Gordon, but the studio declined, as Odenkirk was not yet considered a serious actor. Sandler then suggested [[Philip Seymour Hoffman]], who auditioned but ultimately turned down the role.
