Since the [[1941 Canadian census|1941 census]], [[Statistics Canada]] has divided [[Census geographic units of Canada|Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) and Census Agglomerations (CAs)]] with core populations over 50,000 into census tracts ({{langx|fr| Secteurs des recensement}}), geographically small areas intended to contain roughly 5,000 to 7,500 people with similar socioeconomic characteristics.
