Instead, anhydrous {{chem2|Cu(NO3)2}} forms when copper metal is treated with [[dinitrogen tetroxide]]:<ref name="G&E" /> :{{chem2|Cu + 2 N2O4 -> Cu(NO3)2 + 2 NO}}
