===John Carroll University=== As Shula prepared to graduate from high school in 1947, many men whose football careers were delayed by service in [[World War II]] were returning and competing for college athletic scholarships.<ref name="News-Herald article" /> As a result, Shula was unable to get a scholarship and contemplated working for a year before going to college.
