Prior to the outbreak of the conflict, the bay was referred to as ''Walthenham Harbor'' by British cartographers. The British expeditionary force renamed the bay ''Cumberland Bay''. They eventually retreated from the area after an attempt to march to [[Santiago de Cuba]] was repulsed by [[Spanish Army|Spanish troops]].<ref name="CNICVOL1CH1" />
