===Consonants=== Koasati has the consonants given in the table below, based on Geoffrey Kimball's work. IPA transcriptions occur in brackets when different from the orthography provided by Kimball. {| class="wikitable" |- ! colspan=2 | ! align="center"|Labial ! align="center"|Dental ! align="center"|Palato-alveolar ! align="center"|Velar ! align="center"|Glottal |- ! rowspan=2 | Stop ! <small>plain</small> | align=center | p pʰ | align=center | t tʰ | align=center | c t͡ʃʰ | align=center | k kʰ | align=center | ʼ ʔ |- ! <small>voiced</small> | align=center | b | | | | |- ! rowspan=2 |Fricative ! <small>plain</small> | align=center|f ɸ | align=center|th ɬ | align=center|s | | align=center|h h |- ! <small>voiced</small> | | | | | align=center|h ɦ |- ! colspan="2" align="center" |Nasal | align=center|m | align=center|n | | | |- ! colspan="2" align="center" |Lateral | | align=center|l | | | |- ! colspan="2" align="center" |Glide | align=center|w | | align=center|y j | | |} Not included in this chart is a glottal glide (marked ꞉) that Kimball uses in his own consonant chart, presumably to represent the lengthened vowel sounds of Koasati. In the Tribe's official orthography, the ɬ is represented by th and the t͡ʃ is represented by ch, with no distinction for aspiration. Additionally, Kimball notes that /p/, /t/, and /k/ are aspirated in initial and medial positions. However, the website for the Koasati Language Project explicitly states that these consonants are never aspirated. The ɦ occurs most often before [t͡ʃ], as in [haɦt͡ʃí] "river", spelled hahchi in the official orthography, thereby distinguished from hachi "tail".
