===Vowels=== Lakota has five oral vowels, /i e a o u/, and three nasal vowels, /末 茫 农/ (phonetically [瑟虄 蓹虄 蕣虄]). Lakota /e/ and /o/ are said to be more open than the corresponding cardinal vowels, perhaps closer to [蓻] and [蓴]. Orthographically, the nasal vowels are written with a following 茷, 艐, or n; historically, these were written with ogoneks underneath, 寞 膮 懦. No syllables end with consonantal /n/. {|class="wikitable" style=text-align:center ! colspan=2| ! scope="col" | Front ! scope="col" | Central ! scope="col" | Back |- ! rowspan="2" scope="row" | Close/High ! scope="row" | oral | i i | | u u |- ! scope="row" | nasal | 末 i艐 | | 农 u艐 |- ! scope="row" | Mid ! | e e | | o o |- ! rowspan="2" scope="row" | Open/Low ! scope="row" | oral | | a a | |- ! scope="row" | nasal | | 茫 a艐 | |} A neutral vowel (schwa) is automatically inserted between certain consonants, e.g. into the pairs gl, bl and gm. So the clan name written phonemically as Oglala has become the place name Ogallala.
