Herpestina was a [[scientific name]] proposed by [[Charles Lucien Bonaparte]] in 1845 who considered the mongooses a [[subfamily]] of the [[Viverridae]].<ref name=Bonaparte1845>{{cite book |last1=Bonaparte |first1=C.
