==The ''Paraphrase of John''== His ''Paraphrase of [[Gospel of John|John]]'' (''Metabolḕ toû katà Iōánnēn Euaggelíou'') also survives. Its timing is a debated point: textual analysis seems to suggest that it preceded the ''Dionysiaca'' while some scholars feel it unlikely that a converted Christian would have gone on to devote so much work to the ''Dionysiaca''’s pagan themes.<ref>Vian, Francis. Alessandria: Edizioni dell'Orso, 2005 (Hellenica 17), 565-84</ref>{{sfnp|Cameron|2016}} The terminus post quem for its composition is the commentary on the Gospel of John written by [[Cyril of Alexandria]] (i.e. 425–428), since the theological layer of Nonnus' ''Paraphrase'' is clearly dependent on it.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Doroszewski |first=Filip |url=https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110790900/html |title=Orgies of Words: Mystery Terminology in the "Paraphrase of St. John's Gospel" by Nonnus of Panopolis |date=2022-07-18 |publisher=De Gruyter |isbn=978-3-11-079090-0 |pages=33 |doi=10.1515/9783110790900}}</ref> A more difficult issue is to determine the terminus ante quem. Perhaps it is the time of the composition of Pseudo-Apollinaris' ''Metaphrase of the Psalms'' (c. 460), which seems to refer to Nonnus' poem.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Spanoudakis |first=Konstantinos |title=Nonnus of Panopolis.
