The northwestern portion of the state, corresponding to the [[Red River Valley]] and the drainage basin to the [[Hudson Bay]] was, at the time, part of [[Rupert's Land]], a [[British North America]]n territory. It remained under control of the [[Hudson's Bay Company]] until the [[Treaty of 1818|Anglo-American Convention of 1818]], which set the border between it and the United States to the [[Canada–United States border|49th parallel]].
