Most cultivated phlox, with the notable exception of ''[[Phlox drummondii]]'', are perennial. Species from alpine habitats (and cultivars derived from them) require full sun and good drainage. Those from woodland habitats (such as ''[[Phlox divaricata]]'') require partial shade and soil rich in humus.
