===Takitumu Conservation Area===
A tract of {{cvt|155|ha}} of land has been set aside in the south-east as the Takitumu Conservation Area to protect [[List of birds of the Cook Islands|native birds]] and plants, especially the [[Vulnerable species|Vulnerable]] [[Rarotonga monarch|kakerori]] or Rarotonga monarch. Other [[threatened species|threatened]] birds in the conservation area include the [[Rarotonga fruit dove]] and [[Rarotonga starling]].
