In 1914, he was drafted into the army of the Russian Empire and served as a [[cavalry]]man on Russia's [[Eastern Front (World War I)|western front]] in the [[World War I|First World War]]. Upon the outbreak of the [[Russian Revolution of 1917|Russian Revolution]] in 1917, he sided with the Bolsheviks, joining the [[Red Army]] in 1918{{sfn|Glantz|House|2009|p=41}} and the [[Communist Party of the Soviet Union|Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks)]] in 1919.{{sfn|Axelrod|Kingston|2007|p=813}}
