On February 3, 2012, Appleton was killed while attempting an emergency landing in a [[Lancair IV-P|Lancair IV-PT]] experimental-category, four-seat, turboprop airplane at the [[Boise Airport]]<!-- in [[Boise, Idaho]]-->, moments after taking off.
