Timperley was formerly a [[Township (England)|township]] and [[chapelry]] in the parish of [[Bowdon, Greater Manchester|Bowdon]],<ref>{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/place/4224|title=History of Timperley, in Trafford and Cheshire|publisher=[[A Vision of Britain through Time]]|accessdate=9 November 2024}}</ref> in 1866 Timperley became a separate [[civil parish]], Timperley Parish Council was established in 1894 and it became part of [[Bucklow Rural District]], on 1 April 1936 the parish was abolished and merged with Altrincham, [[Hale, Greater Manchester|Hale]] and [[Sale, Greater Manchester|Sale]].<ref>{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10141059|title=Relationships and changes Timperley CP/Tn through time|publisher=A Vision of Britain through Time|accessdate=9 November 2024}}</ref> In 1931 the parish had a population of 7080.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10141059/cube/TOT_POP|title=Population statistics Timperley CP/Tn through time|publisher=A Vision of Britain through Time|accessdate=9 November 2024}}</ref> and it became part of Altrincham Urban District.

In 1974, Altrincham UD was merged into the new [[Trafford]] Metropolitan Borough of [[Greater Manchester]]. The wards of [[Timperley Central]] and [[Timperley North]] have six out of sixty-three seats on [[Trafford Council]]; both wards returned three [[Liberal Democrats (UK)|Liberal Democrats]] each at the [[2023 Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council election|2023 local elections]].<ref>{{cite web |url=https://democratic.trafford.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx?FN=WARD&VW=LIST&PIC=0 |title=Your Councillors by Ward |publisher=Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council |access-date=16 May 2023}}</ref> Parts of Timperley are also in Broadheath and Hale Barns & Timperley South wards.

Since 1997, Timperley has formed part of the [[Altrincham and Sale West (UK Parliament constituency)|Altrincham and Sale West Constituency]],
before that it was encompassed by the Altrincham and Sale constituency. It has been represented, since 2024, in the [[British House of Commons|House of Commons]] by the [[Labour Party (UK)|Labour MP]], [[Connor Rand]].
