The [[highways in Finland|main highways]] are all paved and have at least two lanes; they are better maintained than ''main'' and ''regional'' roads. Highways numbered from 1 to 7 radiate from the capital [[Helsinki]] (Highways [[Finnish national road 2|2]], [[Finnish national road 5|5]] and [[Finnish national road 6|6]] diverge from [[Finnish national road 1|1]], [[Finnish national road 4|4]] and [[Finnish national road 7|7]], respectively), while highways [[Finnish national road 8|8]] to 10 radiate from [[Turku]] on the south-western coast of Finland. Highways [[Finnish national road 11|11]] and [[Finnish national road 12|12]] originate in [[Tampere]]. The rest of the highways start from other major cities.

Sections of highway between major cities have often been upgraded to [[Motorways in Finland|motorways]], for example between Helsinki and [[Tampere]]. Since Finland is a large and sparsely populated country, there is no need to upgrade all highways to motorways.
